Holy Rosary

The word rosary comes from Latin and means a garland of roses, the rose being one of the flowers used to symbolize the Blessed Virgin Mary. The rosary, a devotion in honor of the Virgin Mary is a very powerful and effective means of praying and meditating Jesus’ life. It consists of a set number of specific prayers. First are the introductory prayers: one Apostles’ Creed (Credo), one Our Father (the Pater Noster or the Lord’s Prayer), three Hail Mary’s (Ave’s), one Glory Be (Gloria Patri). Between the introductory prayers and the concluding prayer are the decades. Each decade is composed of ten Hail Mary. Each decade is bracketed between an Our Father and a Glory Be, so each decade actually has twelve prayers. Each decade is devoted to a mystery regarding the life of Jesus or His mother. The concluding prayer is the Hail Queen (Salve Regina), sometimes called the Hail Holy Queen. It’s the most commonly recited prayer in praise of Mary after the Hail Mary itself, and was composed at the end of the eleventh century. It generally reads like this (there are several variants): “Hail holy Queen, Mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope! To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this vale of tears. Turn, then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this our exile show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

Many miracles have been worked through the recitation of the Rosary. It is one of the MOST POWERFUL prayer tools we have in our spiritual arsenal. And yet, how many excuses do we find for NOT PRAYING it daily!  Let us come together to pray the Holy Rosary to Jesus’ Mother, our Mother!

At St. Hedwig, we recite The Holy rosary to our Mother Mary each morning Monday through Sunday at 7:15am followed by Mass at 8:00 AM. Please join us!

Prayer Before the Rosary: Queen of the Holy Rosary, you have deigned to come to Fatima to reveal to the three shepherd children the treasures of grace hidden in the Rosary. Inspire my heart with a sincere love of this devotion, in order that by meditating on the Mysteries of our Redemption which are recalled in it, I may be enriched with its fruits and obtain peace for the world, the conversion of sinners and of Russia, and the favor which I ask of you in this Rosary. (Here mention your request.) I ask it for the greater glory of God, for your own honor, and for the good of souls, especially for my own. Amen.

Prayer After the Rosary: O GOD, Whose, only-begotten Son, by His Life, Death, and Resurrection, has purchased for us the rewards of eternal life; grant, we beseech You, that, meditating upon these Mysteries of the Most Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise, through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.
